GameExpo Dubai powering the UAE’s gaming future

Dubai’s gaming ambitions reached a new milestone with GameExpo Dubai 2026, an event that has rapidly evolved into one of the region’s most influential gaming and esports festivals. Building on the momentum of previous editions, this year’s festival continued the trajectory highlighted in earlier reports, where more than 43,000 people attended the Dubai Esports & Games Festival, underscoring the city’s rising global profile as a gaming hub. GameExpo 2026 carried that energy forward, expanding its footprint, strengthening industry partnerships, and deepening its support for both global publishers and homegrown talent.

For Muna Al Falasi, Director of Esports and Games Strategy at Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), the festival’s growth is the result of a clear vision. She explains that GameExpo was created after studying major global gaming events and identifying the need for a platform that serves both consumers and the business community. “We have seen two parts. One is the consumer event and one is the business event… so we said, okay, fine, we need to create something for the consumer as well as… the business,” she says, describing the origins of the brand. What began as a single‑hall showcase has now expanded to four halls, with rising participation from publishers, retailers, schools, gaming cafés, and malls. “I have seen it… growing from being… one hall to two halls, and now we are at four halls,” she adds, reflecting on the festival’s evolution.

This year’s edition also strengthened its educational and talent‑development focus through the Education Gaming Summit, a new initiative designed to connect students directly with publishers and studios. Muna notes that the response from young developers has been overwhelmingly positive, especially as government support becomes more visible. “They’re feeling that… there is a strong support from the government and they’re coming forward to be part of it,” she says. The festival’s commitment to nurturing local talent was further reinforced through Game Forward, launched with SME to support Emirati developers. “We also supporting the smaller local publishers… the shortlisted finalists are here showcasing their game,” she explains, highlighting the festival’s role in elevating homegrown creators.

Among the standout voices at GameExpo 2026 was Emirati creator Ismail Ahli, Co‑founder and Creative & Executive Director of Foxnito Studios, who expressed his happiness at participating in the event and praised Dubai for giving independent studios a platform to shine. For Ismail, the Expo represents more than visibility—it represents validation. His journey into game development began with a realization that global gaming lacked authentic representation of Emirati culture. “Games from around the world showcased cultures… yet almost none reflected the stories, symbols, or spirit of the UAE,” he observed, explaining the inspiration behind Foxnito’s creation. This insight led him and his partner—both aviation professionals—to establish Foxnito in 2021 with the ambition of exporting Emirati culture through interactive storytelling. “Ismail studied aviation, his partner studied aviation, and both worked in the aviation industry,” the document notes, highlighting their unconventional path into gaming.

Their debut title, Darkness Road, became a breakout success. The demo, released in 2023, crossed 10,000 downloads in less than three months, with top players coming from Russia, the United States, China, and Germany—regions far outside the Gulf. Players were drawn to the game’s Emirati dialect, cultural puzzles, and unique environments. “Players were excited to experience something new, something rooted in Emirati identity,” the document states, capturing the team’s surprise at the global response. Ismail shared that the Expo gives studios like his the exposure they need to grow, especially as they prepare the full version of the game following a partnership with Sony that will bring Darkness Road to both Steam and PlayStation.

The game itself is a deeply personal survival‑horror experience centered on Hamdan, a protagonist modeled after real people—including Ismail himself. The narrative follows Hamdan’s escape from a deranged doctor who experiments on humans to create zombies, taking players through five culturally inspired areas filled with puzzles, combat, and exploration. “Puzzles are inspired by traditional elements such as the oud… and the boom, the iconic wooden ship,” the document explains, highlighting how Emirati culture is woven into gameplay mechanics rather than used as decoration. Ismail emphasized how player feedback shaped the game’s development, from adding subtitles in seven languages to balancing puzzle difficulty and retaining the protagonist’s kandora after players requested it.

Global brands also played a major role at the Expo. Amazon UAE, represented by Tamima Hamadeh, Head of Marketing, showcased a high‑energy laser‑tag arena themed around speed, reflecting the company’s 15‑minute delivery service. Tamima described Amazon’s partnership with Dubai Economy and Tourism as “an ongoing collaboration for the last three years,” emphasizing the company’s commitment to supporting Dubai’s gaming ambitions. She noted that Amazon’s goal is not just to sell products but to “delight gamers and be a part of their gaming experience,” a sentiment reflected in their interactive booth and influencer collaborations. The broader festival ecosystem continues to benefit from strong industry support. Retailers such as Geekay Games, Z Games, Little Things, and Comicave participated with more than 120 gaming stations, offering visitors hands‑on access to new titles and experiences. “It’s really an ecosystem that we are all trying to build together with the government support,” Muna says, describing the collaborative spirit behind the event .

As Dubai continues to host both B2B and B2C components of the gaming ecosystem, the city’s positioning as a global gaming hub grows stronger. With strong government backing, industry partnerships, and a rising wave of independent creators like Foxnito, the festival stands as a testament to the UAE’s commitment to building a future‑ready gaming landscape—one that blends global ambition with local identity.
