Saudi Arabia a rising global hub for game publishers

PwC Middle East, in collaboration with the Saudi Esports Federation, has released its latest report, “Game Publishers: The Cornerstone of Esports,” which sheds light on the Esports market’s rapid growth, highlighting the unparalleled opportunities for global publishers to thrive in Saudi Arabia’s expanding ecosystem.

Meshal Alqabbani, Executive Director of Esports at the Saudi Esports Federation, said: “As Saudi Arabia continues its rise as a global esports hub, the collaboration between game publishers and regional stakeholders is crucial. By fostering innovation and nurturing talent, we aim to create a dynamic ecosystem that not only captivates players, clubs, and fans but also positions the Kingdom as a leader in the global esports landscape. Our shared vision with publishers ensures the development of inclusive, localized experiences that celebrate the rich potential of this region.”

The global Esports market has experienced robust growth, reaching an estimated value of $1.72 billion in 2023. Projections indicate this momentum will persist, with the market expected to rise to approximately $2.39 billion in 2024 and potentially hit $9.29 billion by 2032. With a $38 billion commitment through the Savvy Games Group, the Kingdom is revolutionising its gaming sector and positioning itself as a key player on the global stage.

Abdulrahman Kanafani, Consulting Partner from PwC Middle East, said: “With substantial investments in cutting-edge infrastructure and a strong emphasis on youth engagement, Saudi Arabia is firmly on track to becoming a global leader in Esports. Strategic collaborations with game publishers highlight the ambitious vision to support the growth of a vibrant, sustainable Esports ecosystem in the Kingdom.”

He continued: “In 2024, the Kingdom hosted the Esports World Cup (EWC), a major event with a prize pool of over $60 million, further cementing Saudi Arabia’s leadership in competitive gaming. To attract more visibility and engagements, competitions like the Esports World Cup are moving beyond single-game tournaments, introducing multi-title formats that appeal to broader audiences and create more inclusive competitive environments. This collaborative approach between publishers, Esports organisations, and governments is crucial to sustaining growth and ensuring the long-term success of the region’s Esports ecosystem.”

Game publishers have been pivotal to the growth of Esports, not only by creating games that captivate millions of players but also by fostering competitive play through tournaments and leagues. Their contributions have been fundamental in shaping the entire Esports ecosystem.

Furthermore, publishers are not only responsible for game creation but are increasingly involved in shaping Esports’ financial and structural growth. Through innovative monetisation strategies such as in-game purchases, battle passes, and strategic partnerships, publishers are helping to ensure the long-term sustainability of the sector. However, they also face the challenge of balancing the pursuit of profit with player satisfaction.

Ongoing investments in infrastructure and talent development, paired with the growing collaboration between local and international stakeholders, provide firm grounds for the Kingdom to thrive within Esports. By leveraging the region’s resources and fostering strong partnerships, Saudi Arabia can help shape the future of Esports and beyond.
