Review: HP OMEN Transcend 14 Gaming Laptop

HP’s latest Omen series gaming laptops feature sleek designs and faster gaming performances. We happen to try out the latest OMEN Transcend 14-fb0097nr gaming laptop, and here are our thoughts about the new device.

Design

HP’s Omen gaming laptop line-up are known for their slim chassis and stylish designs. The Transcend 14 features a slim all-metal chassis, with a dimension of  312.928 mm X 233.426 mm X 17.018 mm, and the laptop weighs only 1.63 kg. The color of the laptop is Shadow black aluminum.

A striking feature that caught our attention is the 14-inch OLED display, and the panel comes with a screen resolution of 2880 x 1800. The display also sports a fast refresh rate, ranging between 48 Hz and 120 Hz, and the response time is 0.2 ms. While the display is certified for 100% DCI-P3 coverage, the maximum brightness is only 500 nits. That said, the OLED screen and its rich contrast ratio help to bring in those deep blacks and enhanced colors.

There is also a HP True Vision 1080p FHD IR camera, located on the top bezel of the screen. The webcam also has support for temporal noise reduction and integrated dual array digital microphones.

The viewing angles of the OLED display are great. Do keep in mind that the screen does not tilt all the way downwards.

The laptop also comes with the shadow black keyboard with an amazing 4-zone RGB backlit system, and translucent keycaps. For gaming, the keyboard features 26-Key Rollover Anti-Ghosting Key technology. The typing experience is also great with the laptop’s keyboard. HP also integrated its Imagepad trackpad on the OMEN Transcend 14.

While HP’s focus was to keep the laptop as slim as possible, they did manage to keep a few of the essential ports. On the right side, there are two USB-A ports with support for 10Gbps speeds. And on the left side, there is a USB-C port with support for power delivery, DisplayPort, and HP Sleep and Charge. There is also a headphone/microphone jack, next to the USB-C port.

On the rear side, HP placed an HDMI 2.1 port, along with another USB-C port with support for power delivery and DisplayPort connections. You can also see the exhaust fan vents, placed on either side of the rear connectivity ports section. The placement of the HDMI port on the rear side is a good decision for better cable management.

The rear lid of the laptop also features the shadow black color, along with the OMEN branding in the middle portion.

The bottom panel of the laptop features the intake air vents, along with dual speakers, placed on either side. The speakers have support for HP Audio Boost, DTS:X Ultra, and HyperX audio technologies.

Performance

The OMEN Transcend 14 features the Intel Ultra 9 185H, a 16-core processor that includes six performance cores, eight power-efficient cores, and two low-power efficient cores. The CPU also can hit a maximum Turbo frequency of 5.1 GHz speeds. The processor also has its own NPU unit. HP also included the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU, featuring 8GB GDDR6 memory, and a 128-bit memory bus.

The GPU comes with a total of 4608 CUDA cores, and the clock speeds range between 1230 MHz and 2175 Mhz. For ray-tracing, the RTX 4070 GPU features the 3rd generation RT cores, and the GPU is based on the Ada Lovelace architecture. The CPU and GPU are joined with 32GB of LPDDR5 memory, and the internal storage used here is the 1TB WD SN810 PCIe 4.0 SSD with Windows 11 Home installed.

We tested the laptop’s performance using benchmark tools such as 3DMark’s FireStrike, TimeSpy, SpeedWay, and CPU Profile, along with PCMark 10 extended test, Superposition benchmark, and Cinebench 2024 tests. Here are the scores below.

The device also uses Intel Wi-Fi 7 BE200 for high-speed internet connectivity, along with Bluetooth 5.4 connections. The laptop also houses a 6-cell, 71 Wh Li-ion polymer battery, and HP includes a 140 W USB Type-C power adapter with the laptop. HP claims that the laptop’s fast charge capability can achieve 50% of the charging in just half an hour.

Verdict

We are impressed with the performance and design of the HP OMEN Transcend 14, and we recommend it for those looking for a slim and stylish gaming laptop that packs good performance. One of the best features we liked about the laptop is its stellar 14-inch OLED display, featuring 2.8K screen resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate. The laptop also comes in an all-metal Shadow Black aluminum chassis, and weighs 1.63 kg.

The device comes with a rear-facing HDMI 2.1 port, along with USB-A and USB-C ports on the sides. The exhaust air vents are on the rear side for better heat dissipation. The laptop packs the 16-core Intel Ultra 9 185H processor, along with the NVIDIA RTX 4070 laptop GPU with 8GB GDDR6, 32GB of LPDDR5 internal memory, and a 1TB high-speed WD SN810 PCIe 4.0 SSD, with Windows 11 Home OS. The laptop also comes with a 6-cell, 71 Wh battery with support for high-speed charging.
