Gen.G Esports has won the League of Legends tournament at the Esports World Cup 2025 after a compelling and highly competitive Grand Final against team AG.AL. Their victorious run at the Esports World Cup means they claim their second League of Legends international title in as many weeks, following victory in The Mid-Season Invitational.
The Grand Final saw Gen.G Esports face team AG.AL, who had previously knocked out Hanwha Life Esports and defending EWC champions T1. But it was Gen.G Esports that secured a 3-2 victory in the Grand Final after AG.AL almost managed to pull off a reverse sweep, falling in the decisive game five.
Not losing a match at the Esports World Cup means that Gen.G is now on a 26-match win streak, which will go down as one of the most dominant runs ever seen. That run also included victory at the Mid-Season Invitational just a week before the Esports World Cup began, making this the fastest back-to-back international title wins in League of Legends history.
“It’s a very meaningful win for our team,” explained Kim “Kiin” Ki-in. “In the past in international events we feel that we have underperformed, so to achieve back-to-back wins in the Mid-Season Invitational and now here at the Esports World Cup means that we are still a top contender level team. We are right at the top.”
“And on a personal level, the wins let me know that I’m still the player I know I can be and that we can continue to lift many trophies together.”
Paying tribute to the fans in Riyadh, Gen.G Esports’ Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon believes the thunderous atmosphere was a significant inspiration behind their thrilling performance in the Grand Final. “The atmosphere in the arena was amazing, you could really feel it and I think that support was what drove us to go on and win in the end,” said Chovy.
“The overall support of the fans throughout the tournament was incredible, they were electric and energetic, and they continue to drive us to lift more trophies again as soon as we can compete again.”
Gen.G Esports players Joo “Duro” Min-kyu, Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon, Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu, Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk and Kim “Kiin” Ki-in overcame challenges from 11 other clubs to win a $600,000 prize and secure 1,000 Club Championship points.
Chief Executive Officer of Gen.G Esports, Arnold Hur, expressed his happiness with the win, as it places the Korean Club at the top of the EWC Club Championship Standings with a total of 1,800 points, 100 points ahead of its closest competitor. He added, “For us, the important thing is to keep on improving and delivering positive performances and results each year compared to the previous one, and that’s what we’re doing in this year’s edition so far. Everyone is working to help the club reach new heights and to KEEP RISING.”
Recognising his brilliance, Kim “Kiin” Ki-in was also named the tournament MVP in League of Legends winning $10,000 for his outstanding performances throughout the Esports World Cup 2025.
“We were here last year, but we got eliminated early, so this time I wanted to lift the trophy, and I did,” said Kim “Kiin” Ki-in. “I’m really excited.”
The second week of EWC 2025 concludes on Sunday 20 July with the Grand Final in Free Fire.
